Update Mar. 5, 2009: The North Carolina House Agriculture Committee heard testimony yesterday about Davie's Law, H.B. 6, which would end the use of gas chambers on shelter animals and ban heartstick and mandate safe lethal injection for euthanasia of dogs and cats.
Veterinarians Drs. Kim Sheets and Lynne Swanson and veterinary technician Susan Boyer testified in support of the bill. They each spoke from experience about the suffering and danger caused by use of the gas chambers and the much safer, humane method of euthanasia, lethal injection.
The committee was provided a 2009 cost study showing in North Carolina euthanasia by lethal injection is less expensive than using gas chambers. That study is attached.
The hearing continues next Wed., Mar. 11 at noon. Please keep calling and writing committee members listed below and urge them to support Davie's Law, H.B. 6. Many are aligned with the agriculture community which opposes this bill.
The hearing next Wed., Mar. 11 at noon will be in Rm 1228 of the Legislative Building, 16 West Jones Street, Raleigh, NC 27601.

On February 14, 2009, a number of animals were confiscated from an animal hoarder in TJ. They were immediately sent to the TJ pound where the dogs sat on the filthy floor, awaiting their fate. Due to the lack of space at the shelter, the decision was made to euthanize a number of the dogs unless they were adopted out. In horrid conditions, these dogs simply needed rescuing. ARWOB has been working desperately to get as many of these guys out of jail. All appear to be very good dogs, however, many just need a nice bath and a proper meal in order to return to proper health. Please pray for the safe return of these animals in the meantime! All they need is a little hope! Below are pictures of some of the dogs in the shelters! Please HELP THEM!
