Meet Toby!
Toby was rescued off the streets of Ensenada in the summer of 2024 and has been in San
Diego in foster care since then. At close to 50 pounds, he is already full grown, tall, and
slender but also very sturdy. We have no idea what his breed is, although he looks and acts
like a shepherd. He is a very loyal and affectionate dog.
Toby is very dog-friendly and lives among many dogs at casa de arwob. He is around large
and small breeds, puppies, and seniors, He loves playing with pups and is mindful of the
blind or fragile senior dogs. Toby is not currently taken to dog parks or dog beach, but
adopters can do these activities once they fully train him. Toby gets along with cats but can
sometimes annoy them. If there are cats in the home, we suggest monitoring their
interactions and keeping them separate when unattended.
Toby runs quickly when playing with other dogs. He is friendly and curious, but also
protective of his people. It is important for an adopter to understand that as a shepherd
mix, Toby requires continuous socialization and training. Additionally, it is important to be an
observant and capable leader to address or prevent any inappropriate reactions that might
occur.
Toby is a big ham. If he could be a lap dog, he would! He has excellent house manners and
is house, potty, and crate trained. He does excellent in the crate, although his previous
foster had some challenges, so it depends on the adopter and the structure provided.
Toby has never lived with children, but we think he will be amazing with them. However, he
can be a bit of klutz, so there’s a chance of he might bulldoze small kids during excited
playtimes.
Toby is noy a frequent barker but will alert to movement outside. He is friendly to visitors and
excited when people arrive. His former foster parent, who cared for him from August 2024
to January 2025, lived with multiple roommates, whereas Toby now lives with a single
person. Toby enjoys car rides and must always be buckled in with a harness for safety.
He can be an apartment dog if he gets the exercise he needs. Homes with yards MUST be
fully fenced in with a 6-foot fence. Toby is an excellent jumper, and he can be fast. A 4-foot
fence is nothing for Toby, although he has never jumped the 2-foot baby gates. His curious
personality means, if he wants to go check out the world on the other side of the short
fence or sees a dog being walked, he will want to go check it out, so a tall, sturdy fence is a
must.
The perfect adopter for Toby would be someone who will enroll him in dog training, not so
much for Toby but for the adopter. Toby is a dog that responds well to training. He requires
physical and mental activities, such as frequent outings, to prevent boredom. In the home
he is easy going, gentle and no problems at all but he loves to explore so just being a
“house dog” will not work for him.
Since Toby is a full-grown adult who is an active breed, we highly recommend only adopters
who are serious about dog ownership or if you are new to dog ownership, to request a
foster-to-adopt trial first. Read more about our FTA trials on our Q & A page!
If you would like to talk about Toby before submitting an application, that’s great, or submit an
application and we will contact you to schedule a call. Thank you!
