Meet Benny!
Benny is a Shepherd/Dachshund mix who has a very sweet and gentle disposition with everyone. Here is what his foster mom has to say about him: “Benny is the most loving and sweet pup. He is quite timid at first, but warms up fast and will never leave your side! He loves his walks and all dogs. He is good with kids, dogs and cats. He just wants to be friends and play with everyone once he trusts you. He will make a great addition to any family!”
Unfortunately Benny does not show well outside of his home and even then, he is like a scaredy cat. When a new person enters the home, he will run to hide or possibly bark in fear and then retreat. Once things calm down, he settles down and comes out to check things out. You can always win his heart by offering him food. :-) He is the definition of a food hound!
When Benny first came to ARWOB, he ran away and got lost in a canyon for a whole week! He obviously was a bit confused about his new situation! This was back in March 2017 and now he may get himself into trouble if he gets out of the yard when walking in and out of the gate. But luckily he stays in his foster mamma’s carport, waiting for his human to come and get him asap! Ha, ha!
Benny can be a great guard dog, but he’s also a big scaredy cat. So he tends to bark at something that scares him and then run and hide. You might say he is a “flight” rather than a “fight” kind of boy. :-) Benny just LOVES other dogs and would do fine with dominant or alpha dogs since he just wants to be friends, but he is not a pushover. Benny is crate and house trained and rides well in the car. He is really an amazing personal dog, so if you are a gentle and calm family, he would love to meet you! His perfect adopter would be a single adult or a couple with or without children. However, the children should be very respectful and ideally over the age of 12, so Benny is not too scared by all the running around at first.
We have had Benny a LONG time and let us tell you, this dog is amazing, handsome, funny, loving, and active!! He is the full package! But when he is not being active, he is perfectly content to be a couch potato and just loves to cuddle with you once he gains his confidence. His adopter will HAVE to give him the time he needs to adjust — not a couple of hours or a day, but a few days. Once he trusts you, he will show you just how bright he can shine! We would love to find a long-term foster home for this boy while he finds his special forever family. We offer foster-to-adopt programs, so you can get know him.
