Update- 7/22/19
frodo is a distemper survivor pup and this is information to know about him:
Handsome boy Alert ‼️
Meet Frodo. Frodo was rescued along with his siblings in ensenada, Mexico by an indie Rescuer back in April.
The pups were sick and received medical care in ensenada to find out they had parvo and only little Frodo survived.
Frodos Rescuer contacted a local shelter who wasn’t able to accept
Him into their program because of his undersocialized personality and showed shy. So, as of 5/1/19 Frodo has been under our care. Sadly, 2 weeks later he showed very subtle signs of distemper and with that we canceled potential adopters who were interested in him and started his quarantine and observation. Sure enough, as time progressed his neurological symptoms were more pronounced and his diagnoses came back as distemper positive pup.
Well, it’s been 3 months and we can safely say this handsome little dude is a fighter and survivor
He is a “normal” pup who will
Not need any special care except a lot of love ❤️.
His little Quirks as a distemper survivor are the following:
1) he has a nervous tic, his body will tremor and certain days or times of the day is more noticeable than others.
For example - When he sleeps or is at rest his body is “twitchy” BuT don’t worry he is NOT in any pain.
2) Sometimes going from
Rest to play mode can take him a second to compute or get his baring together, sometimes. But being slow can have his benefits, in Frodo’s case, he takes that time to seek attention and be babied
3) His teeth are starting to come in, his adult teeth, and his enamel on all teeth is affected BUT it shouldn’t have any issues as we seen/experienced first hand from previous distemper survivors we have rescued. Just know he will not have “pretty pearl white” teeth.
Now that the negative is said. Let’s talk about the positive!
Frodo is freakishly awesome!
Great with people, kids, dogs, cats.
Crate trained and house trained
He doesn’t shed much.
He has not exhibited any separation anxiety and is cool as a cucumber.
He is not a barker inside the home but he can become a barker outside-while having yard time.
Frodo is NO longer infectious towards dogs but because of his long quarantine period he has not been exposed to walks/leashes or car rides. He could also use exposure to “new” people , he loves new people but will bark like a scared pup when he first meets them, it only takes a minute for him to be friends, his little brain just needs a second to compute what’s going on. So, he could be a great guardian! This should go away as soon as we find a foster or adopter who can expose him to new things.
Frodo is a 5mo 20lbs border terrier X who will likely grow to be in the 30-40lbs range
This baby loves to play with doggy friends and seek love and attention from his person. Cuddles in bed are the best, when he is not being a crazy teething shark puppy
If you would like to foster Frodo to experience what life would be like with a distemper survivor please submit an adoption application online and request a foster to adopt trial. It may be a while until we find an adopter who can feel comfortable about making this decision and for now we could really use help with finding him a foster home to help him learn new things like neighborhood walks and meeting all kinds of new people.
Videos will be posted on the comment section to show his tics.
