UPDATE 7/14/20:

Sophie is a sweet dog who will need an experienced adopter, as she tends to be an alpha female.  Her foster family has told us that she loves attention, including being pet and laying next to them.  She is a very smart dog and walks well on her leash, but she is still somewhat prone to reacting to other dogs by lunging, barking, or nipping at them when she first meets them.  Therefore, they have not felt comfortable taking her to the dog park.  Once she gets to know other dogs, she eventually becomes non-reactive, but will retain her alpha position.  Therefore, her adopter will need to work on her commands to help her understand who is in charge.

She is currently a single dog in her foster home, but may do well with another mellow dog who does not mind Sophie being the alpha. Her foster family have been introducing Sophie to new people on a weekly basis.  They notice she will be skittish if she is not given time to warm up.  Once she feels comfortable with new people, she becomes more relaxed and confident.  They have noticed that Sophie has done well with people of all ages once she gets to know them.

UPDATE 5/19/20:

Sophie's foster mom sent this update: "Just wanted to give you an update. Sophie is doing great. We have taught her new tricks, such as lay down, stay, and working on Shake. She is dog friendly, but sometimes while introducing her to some dogs on leash, and although she still has to be the alpha she has been better at getting along with them. I have also introduced her to some friends and she has been timid at first and then comes around and overall loved the new company.”

ORIGINAL RESCUE STORY:

Meet Sophie! Sophie was left tied at the fence of an indie rescuer in Tijuana at the end of September. She has since been spending time with a wonderful foster family, who has the following update for us: Sophie is great with adults and dogs of all sizes, once she gets to know you. We would caution with meeting new dogs both on and off leash, as she can bark, lunge and nip. She is improving everyday, and has been going to dog parks without major incidents as of late, but we would recommend to watch her closely. we would also caution with very young kids/toddlers who cannot be taught how to properly interactive with a nervous dog. She is good with rabbits if separated by a fence/gate (not tested with free roaming in the same space). She is high energy, loves wrestling (with her 70lb foster brother!), squeaky toys and playing tug. She will be a good fetch dog with some training. She loves attention, will follow you around the house and loves to snuggle and nap on you/near you. She is mostly house trained but can have “happy accidents.” She is not much of a barker inside the house, usually just when someone comes to the door. She does well in her crate up to 6-7 hours at a time during the day and 9-10 hours overnight. She is also fairly good on her leash now, but could use more work (pulling).
