Meet Tux!

Update from foster family 12-20-22:

"Tux is the perfect gentleman. He has settled in well with my four small dogs, honoring the pack leadership while giving one of them appropriate corrections when neededl Tux sleeps quietly all night in a crate and has not had any accidents in the house. He happily joins me on the couch when I invite him, but otherwise chooses a dog bed and snuggles in. Tux loves to follow the sun around the house and yard, and can usually be found basking in it. He loves riding in the car and going to Fiesta Island for long walks. He has spent time at two outdoor restaurants in the past week and was a shining star both times! Tux is a confident boy who treats all dogs he meets with a tiny bit of interest, and then moves on. We are working on Tux's crying/barking when I leave the house. Turning on music and not letting him see me walk out the door is helping. When he does cry, it doesn't seem to last long. I think with time (and seeing that his person returns) he will get better and better. Tux is the perfect dog for anyone looking for a calm, gentle, fun-loving dog to go on adventures with or just hang out."

Original Story:

Tux was adopted from ARWOB as a young adult dog in February 2015.  Unfortunately, we received a call on 11/20/22 right before the Thanksgiving holiday from the local San Diego shelter.  Tux had been dropped off at the shelter by his owners because they were moving.  We headed out to pick him up and brought him back into ARWOB’s care.  Sadly his nails were almost embedded into his poor foot pads.  We do not know why and we do not know his story, but we were certainly very angry and disappointed.  Thankfully it only took about 5 minutes to trim his nails.  He wasn’t happy with us, but about half way through his nail trim he realized it was for his own good and he was fine with it.  It is obvious the family didn’t even try to take him to the vet or the groomer, as there was no good reason for his nails to be allowed to get that bad.

Tux is a very easy going and sweet guy!  He has been good with all the dogs he has met at ARWOB “headquarters.”  At Casa de ARWOB, all dogs are crated when they first arrive, unless they are house trained and potty trained.  Unfortunately, Tux does not handle being alone very well.  He is crate trained, as he doesn’t try to destroy the crate or go potty in the crate when he’s in it.  He is happy and content as long as he sees his current foster, however if the foster leaves the room, he becomes vocal and make his displeasure known.  His vocalization is not usually very long or very loud, but on occasion it can be.

As of 12/11/11 we are going to try a new foster as a trial to see if Tux does better in a home where he is NOT crated and we are hoping that is a factor that is making him so unhappy.  At that time we will also find out if he is house trained or not, but we do believe he is house trained and potty trained.  We encourage people to follow up for updates about Tux on how he is doing with the separation anxiety he has exhibited.  Our goal is to find out it it’s just the crate issue or if he is a little “Velcro Dog” that needs to see and be with his human.  We are hoping his anxiety is because he dislikes the crate.  All of this will determine if he will need a family who is okay with a little dude with attachment issues, meaning if he needs a family with a human at home with him all the time OR if his human would need to include him and take Tux with them when they do errands, go to work, etc.  It will be a big determining factor about which family would be the best match for Tux (i.e. living in an apartment with lots of neighbors or in a home with no actual issues of a little senior pup that will speak his mind sometimes).

We would love to find someone who is looking to adopt a “Velcro Dog,” who just wants to be a great companion and be next to you, and either has a yard for him or someone who will take him on walks, which he enjoys.  He also enjoys riding in the car with his face plastered on the window trying to look out.  In fact, if he could he would have his whole face hanging out the window enjoying the view and the fresh air.  He is still very spry and can go up and down stairs just fine, as well as getting in and out of his foster’s truck without any trouble.

Tux is healthy and up-to-date on his medical.  He does have some moderate tartar and ARWOB would be happy to sponsor a dental once an adopter is found (we can raise funds for this).  If you are interested in this sweet guy, please complete an online application at www.arwob.org as Tux would love to meet you!
