Harry, true to his current bio, is a very sweet fellow who just wants to get along with everyone! He is healthy, active and has a pillow-soft coat which makes you just want to hug him. This playful boy has been exposed to the neighborhood kids and thinks it's great to run around the yard and play keep away. Fosters live in military housing and there's mucho aircraft activity at all hours overhead, yet happy go-lucky Harry is unconcerned. He so enjoys wrestling around the yard with his foster brother! When they aren't wrestling or enjoying the San Diego sunshine on the grass, Harry sits patiently at the door on his bed hoping to come inside. He understands he isn't allowed in the kitchen and watches food prep from his appointed spot in the family room. He loves his dog food. He is not a fan of your standard dog treats, but loves doggie health bars with baked apples and yogurt. Harry has a very proper sit. He clearly understands that his sitting makes people happy- and happy people pet Harry! He is working on his loose leash training, down, and on your bed. He sleeps well in his crate at night. He had a pair of accidents inside at first, but is getting the hang of hearing much praise for making his deposits in the yard. This sweet boy is a lot wary of a "mad voice" and chooses to crouch and run away if he thinks anyone is angry. Harry is such a big, smart and mature acting boy most of the time, it is easy to forget he is still a puppy...until your flip flop or sneaker goes missing! He requires toys for heavy chewers. His best skill so far is shredding tennis balls- don't look away for even a second! This handsome fellow would do well in an active home. Harry's Foster Dad has helped him learn to run next to a bike!
Harry would be great for "active" people with or without kids. He can run 2 miles next to a bike, We don't do more due to his age and our available time. I'm sure he'd be a good hiker once he learns more leash manners and improves at recall. I also think he would get better and better in busy environments with a person he trusted to help him with confidence. He would probably love to have a dog brother or sister- he is very observant and would follow a good example. He loves to play and wrestle with Peter. I also think he'd stand alone and become obsessed with a stay-at-home parent. He can take loud noises in stride. But he is very sensitive to "tone". He can tell when someone is mad/he has done something disappointing to his human. I don't know if someone yelled and threw things at him, swiped him with a broom, or similar prior to ARWOB. It seems like it from his response at times. If you yell in a mad sounding voice he runs for cover- like I once dropped something (my own fault) and hissed "dang it" and he was crouching and running for cover in an instant. Yet if someone yells in a happy voice tone or even screeches in happiness (2-8 year old kids)- he is all good. He WANTS you to be happy. He fully understands that sitting is the easy answer to about any request a person makes. He is learning down. The neighborhood kids are trying to teach him to shake and wait. They are also trying to teach him puzzles. He is smart enough to do it all. We are still learning what motivates him- it is mostly kindness/pets/praise.
ORIGINAL RESCUE STORY:
Harry is the sweetest most outgoing silly teenager who seems to enjoy all the dogs and humans he meets. As of 9/25 he is 40 pounds and we think he may reach a potential of 50-55 pounds when fully grown. He was rescued off the streets of Ensenada, Mexico along with her 4 other siblings and their mom.
Harry is fully vetted and more than READY to find a foster or adoptive home. If you'd like to perhaps foster to adopt Harry for a week or two please submit a dog adoption application online in order for a volunteer to contact you and schedule a meet and greet in the 92111 area. OR you can also attend adoption events to meet him and if you like him you can then submit the application. Please, check animal attendance at our adoption event calendar online at ARWOB.org
