Josie is in so many ways a perfect dog. She’s a slim 32 lbs., about knee high, and curls up so compactly sometimes you’d never guess she’s as tall as she is. She’s very photogenic, with the most expressive ears ever. She always loves a belly rub. She’s cat and child friendly. In fact, she’s met rabbits, guinea pigs and miniature horses and simply tried to play with each – no aggression towards any of them. Josie is calm and mellow at home and at work, yet full of energy when appropriate, playing with each and every dog at the dog park. She loves to run (makes a great running companion), chase balls (though she doesn’t always return them right away), play at the beach, and hike. She’s great in the car, comes to work with me everyday and of all the dogs that come to the office, she’s everyone’s favorite.
She does an enthusiastic happy dance at mealtime, but will lay down and wait until given the command ‘take it’ before eating her food. She’s passed her Canine Good Citizen test at the San Diego Humane Society and knows commands such as touch, sit, wait, lay down, chin down, roll over, crawl, and place (go to your bed). She’s perfectly house trained, doesn’t chew on anything but her toys, and doesn’t go on furniture or in kitchens (she came to me that way). She almost never barks - only protectively (if someone’s approaching the front door), particularly at men who are strangers approaching the door. She is a bit timid of sudden noises and some men, though she’s made friends with every one she’s met.
Her teeth require daily brushing – she has enamel hypoplasia, which means her tooth enamel never formed properly, and she has very shallow roots to her teeth, which means she should not chew any bones or toys harder than you can dent with your fingernail. She’s had a sealant applied to her teeth by a veterinary dentist to replace the missing enamel, but because it’s not as perfect as natural enamel, brushing her teeth keeps her gums and teeth healthy and reduces the frequency of professional cleanings to once per year. Without brushing, gum disease develops rather quickly
