Meet Mya! Mya is a sweet Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler mix that spent the beginning of her life with a kind family in Tijuana. During that time, she lived with several dogs, a few cats, and a toddler. She is very sweet with those who are closest to her and feels safe within the home, but she gets very anxious outside of the house. We think this is a result of her not being taken for walks when she lived in Tijuana, given that walking a dog is virtually impossible in that area. Since coming to ARWOB in San Diego, she has spent 4 months with a foster family and has made some progress. Here is what her current foster family has to say about Mya:
“Mya has grown to be much more confident outside of our home. When we first took her on walks Mya was intimidated by everyday things. However, Mya has grown to be more comfortable in her surroundings. She loves to go on walks and especially loves to walk off leash. She stays close and responds when called and checks in often when she is off leash. She often won’t pee or poop when walking in an unfamiliar place preferring to walk in the park she’s most accustomed to. Because she’s afraid of loud and sudden noises, she prefers walking in areas that are calm and quiet.
Mya is very shy around new people and often hides when someone new comes to the house. She will however eventually come out for a visit and a pet. Through training we have learned how to help Mya with her shyness and how to talk to people about her being a shy dog. She is great with children!
When we take Mya out to new places, we bring treats and her blanket so she can lay where she feels secure. If she is anxious she doesn’t eat even her favorite treats. We know she has started to relax when she begins eating her treats (among other body language signals). Around other dogs Mya takes some time, but becomes playful and warm once she relaxes. When younger more rambunctious dogs push Mya to play too hard, she does warn them that they are crossing the line. However, she has never bitten another dog since she has been with us. She’s more comfortable with dogs that let her be, eventually following and playing with them.
Mya loves to play and roam in the backyard when you are outside with her. She’s great at fetch - truly acrobatic. It is really fun to watch her running, jumping and leaping. She prefers to play fetch in her backyard rather than in a park where she’s less comfortable. Inside Mya is very low-key yet attentive. When she’s not actively following other family members around she is snuggled up in her bed or on her blanket. She likes to look out the front window and door and often barks at people on the street, but she is not a big barker."
Mya has a bit of separation anxiety when she if left alone, so she would do best with someone who is retired or someone who is home a lot. She is a very special, loving dog who deserves a great home. She will need a patient adopter who is willing to help her gain more confidence outside of the home and help her continue to overcome her shyness. She has a lot of love to give and would like nothing more to find her forever home! Won’t you consider giving her the love she needs? If you are interested in adopting this gorgeous girl, please fill out an online adoption application. Don’t wait!!
