Meet Sweetpea!
This beautiful girl was adopted from ARWOB in February, 2016 and returned February, 2017. She was adopted by a family with a young child in the home when she was just 3-4months old. She was the only cat in the home and the mom worked from home most of the time. She also mentioned she was an experienced cat owner. However, from the beginning, she mentioned the reason to relinquish Delilah, now Sweetpea, was inappropriate urination around the home. She said she was working with her since the beginning. We don't know about that. We do know she had her seen by different vets who all placed her on behavioral medications. She also changed the litter type so many types but she refused to change the litter box from the garage to inside the home. Most cats don't want to go potty in an area that is scary. We do know, however, if she developed this habit it can be difficult to break when she wasn't worked with from the beginning. She wanted to send her to a farm type situation where she could be an outside cat. That is NOT the solution. Now that she is back with us at the adoption center, she hasn't had a single accident. She hasn't peed in her bed once, so we are hopeful she is relearning (easily if we may add) her normal kitty habits. We don't know how she is with children as she mentioned the child never looked for attention from Sweetpea. It seems she was more bonded to the mother than with the husband or child. She had a rough introduction to our center because of the rest of the kitties.
Update April: Since Sweetpea has been in the adoption center, she has used her litter box well and hasn't had any accidents anywhere in her condo or bed at all during this past 6 weeks. She is a quiet, calm kitty..a little bit more on the shy side, but VERY affectionate when she feels comfortable with you.. She LOVES being scratched under her chin and petted. Sweetpea responds well to TLC and we think that this is something that may have been missing or she wasn't receiving enough ( in Sweetpea's mind) to enable her to feel that she didn't need to add irregular elimination behavior as a means of getting more attention, although not in a positive way. She is not really comfortable with a bunch of other super active kitties racing around her, but is fine with calm, quieter cats, like one of our rescues by the name of Rainbow.
We are hopeful she will come around with time with other cats (although she really enjoys Rainbow), and she is still such a young girl. She just acts as an older, gentle soul. Ideally, she needs an experienced cat owner who can help her rehabilitate behaviorally and mentally so she can be reassured in a normal, stable home who trully knows cats. She really will be a gentle, affectionate addition to her forever family.
We would be happy to offer a foster to adopt trial to make sure she finds the perfect family.
